If you’ve never had acupuncture before, you may be wondering what your first visit will be like. Will it hurt? What should you wear? Do you need to prepare in any way?
First, know that it’s completely normal to have questions. Your first acupuncture appointment is designed to give you and your practitioner time to get to know one another, talk about your health, and create a treatment plan that feels appropriate for you.
Here’s what you can expect.
Your First Visit Is 90 Minutes
Your initial acupuncture appointment will be approximately 90 minutes. Follow-up appointments are typically 60 minutes.
The additional time during your first visit allows us to slow down and focus on you. Before treatment begins, there will be more time for an initial intake and a detailed conversation about your health history, current concerns, lifestyle, and goals for treatment.
This conversation is an important part of your care. It helps your practitioner understand the bigger picture rather than simply focusing on one symptom or concern.
Your Health History Matters
During your first visit, your practitioner will ask questions about your current health and any concerns you’re experiencing. You’ll also have an opportunity to share relevant medical history, previous treatments, and anything else you feel is important.
Please be sure to let your practitioner know about any medications and supplements you’re currently taking. It’s especially important to mention if you:
Are pregnant or think you may be pregnant
Take blood thinners or medications that affect blood clotting
Have diabetes
Take prescription medications or regular supplements
Have recently had surgery or another significant medical procedure
Have any other medical conditions or health concerns
There’s no need to wonder whether something is “important enough” to mention. When in doubt, share it. Your practitioner can determine what information is relevant to your care.
What Should You Wear?
For your appointment, wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to areas of the body that may be treated.
Think soft pants, shorts, or clothing that can be comfortably adjusted as needed. You generally don’t need to dress up or bring anything special.
Your comfort is important, so let your practitioner know if you’re cold, uncomfortable, or need to adjust your position during treatment.
Have Something to Eat Before Your Appointment
It’s a good idea to have a meal or snack before your acupuncture treatment rather than arriving hungry.
You don’t need to eat a large meal immediately beforehand. A light or regular meal or snack is usually a good choice.
Coming to your appointment nourished and hydrated can help you feel more comfortable during your treatment.
What Happens During Treatment?
Once your intake and health history conversation are complete, your practitioner will explain what to expect and discuss your treatment.
Acupuncture involves the gentle insertion of very thin needles into specific points on the body. Many people find the treatment deeply relaxing. You may notice sensations such as a mild heaviness, warmth, tingling, or a feeling of relaxation as the treatment progresses.
Your practitioner will check in with you throughout the appointment and make adjustments as needed. You should always feel comfortable asking questions or speaking up if something doesn’t feel right.
Come With Questions
You don’t need to know anything about acupuncture before your first visit. Your appointment is a chance to learn, ask questions, and talk openly with your practitioner about your goals.
If you’re nervous about needles, unsure about what acupuncture can help with, or simply curious about what your treatment will involve, let your practitioner know. There’s no such thing as a silly question when it comes to your care.
A Simple Way to Prepare
Before your first appointment, keep these few things in mind:
Plan for about 90 minutes for your first visit.
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
Have a meal or snack before your appointment.
Drink water and arrive hydrated.
Bring a list of your medications and supplements, if helpful.
Tell your practitioner about important health conditions, including pregnancy, diabetes, blood-thinning medications, and other relevant medical concerns.
Come with any questions or concerns you have.
Most importantly, come as you are. Your first visit is an opportunity to slow down, talk about what’s going on, and begin developing a treatment approach tailored to you.
Whether you’re completely new to acupuncture or simply trying a new practitioner, your first appointment is about creating a comfortable space for conversation, understanding, and care.
